Ten Things I’ve Done That You Probably Haven’t

1. Got a postcard from writer Helene Hanff after responding to an interview she gave to a Brazilian newspaper. She stated she disliked James Joyce. I promptly agreed with her. I was 12. She was tickled. (Wonder what she'd say if she knew I went on to write my dissertation on Ulysses?)

2. Asked a real prince, of the Portuguese and Austrian royal families, to marry me. He was in his 40s. I was 9. My proposal went like this: "Hey Baldy, will you marry me?"

3. Was in a TV commercial in Brazil. The commerical encouraged 18-year-olds to enlist in the army. I played the role of a little sister presenting her brother, who was home on leave, with a cake.

4. Was hospitalized while traveling abroad. Three times...(Once in Uruguay, once in Miami, and once in Paris.)

5. Stood on a gigantic sea turtle, having mistaken it for a rock.

6. Held a chimpanzee (no, not McGyva!).

7. Watched the movie "The Cutting Edge" more than 30 times.

8. Annoyedly said to former Massachuetts governor Dukakis, before realizing who he was, "please, sir, you need to sit down now" while ushering at a university function.

9. Made a delicious cake using the "broil" setting on the oven (the oven was busted- only broil worked).

10. Had a whole bunch of people calling me by a different name altogether for a certain period of time.
